Dialysis Technician Schools in Virginia

Dialysis Technicians play a crucial role in the care of patients with end stage kidney disease. They deliver quality care and help the person receive a course of treatment that often allows them to lead relatively normal lives despite this disability.

The kidneys are supposed to flush wastes and toxins from the blood and when they can no longer accomplish this function, dialysis treatment is necessary. Patients go to clinics where they are hooked up to a dialysis machine and their blood pumped through tubes and filters where it is cleaned and purified. The Dialysis Technician assists with this process under the supervision of registered nurses.

Dialysis Technician training courses in Virginia provide theory and clinical training and some give an Associate of Applied Science in Clinical Hemodialysis when the courses are completed. The clinical training is done in what is called an externship, where you work with a trained technician so you can learn to perform all the duties perfectly.

Some of the subjects studied are:

  • Kidney function
  • Dialysis equipment
  • Electrolyte balance
  • Nutrition

To practice in Virginia, you need to be certified. National exams are the best way to achieve certification.

You will find a few schools for Virginia residents that will provide you an education as a Dialysis Technician.

Stratford University

Stratford University has three campuses in Virginia that offer programs for Clinical Hemodialysis Technician training. There are located in Glen Allen, Falls Church (Tysons Corner) and Woodbridge. At all three campuses, you can receive an Associate’s degree.

DaVita has numerous dialysis centers throughout Virginia, including in Richmond, Fairfax, Alexandria, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Although not a school, DaVita offers exceptional training opportunities where you train as you work and get paid. Competition is stiff for their training programs, but if you are persistent (and have a background in healthcare) there is a good chance you can qualify. On the job training has a lot of pluses, and you will be eligible for certification once you work for a certain length of time. Some scholarship programs are available as well. DaVita will let employees attend school and reimburse the students for their books and tuition.

Dialysis 4 Career

If you are not close enough to any campus or DaVita clinic, doing your studies online is always an option. Dialysis 4 Career offers a 60-day training program where you can get the theory you need. Within this time period you can study at your own speed from home at your computer. This can be quite convenient, but takes discipline to stick with it. Once done the theory, Dialysis 4 Career will help you find a place for you to receive the needed hands-on experience you’ll need to qualify for certification.

When you get a thorough education in Hemodialysis, you will find employment without much of a problem. This field seems in high demand as more and more people are diagnosed with kidney failure each year. Many large Virginia hospitals look for competent Dialysis Technicians to assist patients in Inova Fairfax Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital and the University of Virginia Medical Center, to name a few.
